Frank Chikane writes in his seminal account of the days leading to the recall of former president Thabo Mbeki, after his election defeat at the Polokwane conference, how many comrades wanted the defeated Mbeki dislodged from power – ngoko! (now!).
In his encounter at the events as they unfolded Chikane notes “voices of reason … were drowned out by the angry voices of the night … in the end, the ‘ngoko’ chorus won the day”.
