On Monday morning, South Africa woke up to the news that Will Smith, apparently in defence of his wife Jada Pinkett Smith, had slapped Chris Rock live on stage during the Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday night.

What if we thought about this incident in terms of Russia’s war on Ukraine? In this analogy, Russia is Pinkett Smith, who is seemingly a victim of Ukraine because the latter is not respecting Russia’s security and is belittling it by courting the US-led North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (Nato).
