Summer is in full swing and while you’re enjoying the warm weather, sunny skies, cool cocktails and beach/pool days, you might want to consider adding a few trendy fashion items to your wardrobe.

If you’re not really a fashionista you might not know where to start, but worry not as local fashion designer Sello Medupe, founder of Scalo, takes us through this summer’s top fashion trends.

The Soweto-born designer founded Scalo in 2009 and aims to bring out a fresh and innovative approach to design in order to create wearable yet cutting-edge clothes. Speaking to DRUM, Sello says the brand prides itself on its consistent approach to risk-taking with bold fabric and colour choices and its deep understanding of the human form and how it’s best flattered.

Since its formation, Scalo has styled several A-listers, including former Miss SA Ntandoyenkosi Kunene-Mthethwa when she represented South Africa at Miss Universe, Cassper Nyovest at the MTV Africa Music Awards, and many of South African model Blue Mbombo’s red carpet looks.

Here are the five top fashion trends to follow this summer, according to Sello Medupe:

1.       High-waisted leather/distressed skirts and shorts

3.       Chunky sneakers

4.       Small sunglasses

5.       Stripes (specifically for men)
