I’m a 21-year-old woman. When growing up, I had big dreams. I studied hard so that I could live a better life. Writing stories and poems was one of my favourite things to do and I was good at it.

When I was in Grade 4, I had filled a notebook with stories and poems and I would narrate them to my classmates who loved them.

I continued writing in high school. When I was in Grade 11, my family moved to a new place and I had to attend a new school. In my new school, I met a girl who was quiet, polite and had a beautiful smile.

We quickly became friends because we had so much in common. We spent a lot of time together and shared almost everything. She asked to borrow my story book and because I trusted her, I gave it to her. A month passed and she did not bring the book back.

Every time I asked her to return the book, she had an excuse.

Three months later, our school announced that there would be a story writing competition during library week. I did not enter the competition because I was shy and scared to stand in front of the whole school and share my story.

My friend entered the writing competition without telling me. I was shocked to find out that she had entered the competition using one of my stories from the book that she borrowed. She won the competition and received some money.

My story was even read on a community radio station and all along she pretended that it was hers. She took credit for my work. did not know what I was talking about. She had copied my stories into a new book.

I couldn't even prove that those were my stories because she had destroyed my notebook. I was so heartbroken. Since then, I find it hard to trust people. I don’t even want to write anything again.
