Ask Dr Eve

Question She’s HIV positive and I’m negative

I went for an HIV test with my baby mama. She tested positive and my results were negative. The results are confusing because we had unprotected sex.

It can be confusing when one partner tests positive and the other is negative. The virus can be present in the blood but be undetected, and appear months after the initial infection. So perhaps your girlfriend had the virus before and never knew as she had not been tested. It is also well known that some partners simply do not get the virus despite unprotected sex with a positive person. I recommend that you both get tested again after three months. In the meantime, use condoms.
