How to deal with debt review firms

Question:Debt review firm took our money

My husband and I joined a debt review company last October. They promised to help us and deducted R12 000 from our bank account in two months, claiming it was for lawyers. Now we want to claim back the money as they never helped us. We joined another debt solutions company, which has been very helpful. Our car was nearly repossessed because of our association with the first debt review company. How do we claim back the money as the agreement was a verbal agreement and made over the phone. Can I use the bank statements as proof that they took our money from our account.

You should ask the debt review company for a detailed breakdown of what the money was used for? Also, by now there should have been a judgment granted in favour of the debt review and the company should have court records to prove this in their possession. Failure to produce these documents means the company owes you and should refund your money with immediate effect.
