“My sister and I have fought ever since we were young. Now that we are old, I have told her that we are should make peace. I have also told her that she needs to make a good future for herself. She acts irresponsibly and drinks until she can’t take it any more. I am so worried that she is going to be raped. Her two children are also very concerned about their mom. When I try to talk to my sister, she always says that her mother is in the graveyard and that no-one should shout at her. What must I do to make her see sense?” – Mitso, Edgardale
I respect you for standing by your sister. Many people in our community are like this. It is sad that no matter what anyone does, it is unlikely that you will ever be able to help them. In most cases there are reasons for their behaviour and they seldom reveal what the reasons are. It could be a loss of one she loved very much, for instance your mother, or failure to reach her goals in life. People like this need professional help. I suggest you call Al-Anon on 011 435 9792 for advice. It is an organisation for families and friends of problem drinkers.
