Gospel singer Khaya Mthethwa, who rose to fame when he became the first black person to win the singing competition, Idols SA season 8, was involved in a Twitter rant recently after tweeting his ‘insensitive’ question to his followers. His Twitter followers were not pleased with the question he posted and they started questioning and mocking him on his sexuality.
HOW THE FIRE STARTED
Idols winner took to his twitter account to pose a leading question to women on whether they date a guy who was once gay but is now straight. It is not clear what incited Khaya to pose that question, but some of his followers were having none of it that’s where the attacks on Khaya started. Users swamped the social media platform with memes and comments that clapped back at Khaya’s question and that took the gospel singer’s name right to the top of the trending list on Twitter.
It is a sensitive time in South Africa to be asking questions considering homosexuality following Idols SA judge Somizi Mhlongo’s rant at churches after a homophobic sermon during a service held at Grace Bible Church. Khaya being a pastor’s child felt the need to raise this topic regardless of the hype around it and the way the question was constructed was too insensitive. This is how he asked the question: Ok can I ask; Ladies would u date a guy who was gay and now is straight!? If yes why & if not why not?”
WHAT BLACK TWITTER HAD TO SAY ABOUT HIS QUESTION
Twitter is the one place where you have to trend carefully on what you tweet about because you might be stepping on someone’s toes, being a public figure makes matters worse. One would say Khaya didn’t really take that into consideration when he tweeted the question so black twitter came to the party too and this is what some of them had to say:
“secondly I think it is way out of hand to ask this kind of a question because people already have their own ideas about you” one of the users tweeted.
“maybe you could explain how one can change from being gay to being straight, since you've walked that road” other one tweeted.
“funny you should ask but.. I always thought you had a lot of gay tendencies” tweeted one of his followers.
After tweets poured in, Khaya tweeted “Freedom of speech is tricky.”
Black twitter has no chill when it comes to airing your dirty laundry out in public, that’s the case with Khaya’s incident. It went from a simple question to twitter users dragging out his past relationships with Nomzamo Mbatha and Jessica Nkosi.
“Freudian slip. Ask Nomzamo and Jessica, they'll tell you,” tweeted the follower.
“I always wished you could come out of closet but anyway now you out” another one added.
“yoh ! ???? are you coming out of the closet already??? But it's long overdue though” Asked one of his followers.
When Khaya was contacted to comment on the matter, he clearly said he doesn’t have a comment.
