When it comes to hair, there is no other person that comes to mind than Ntombomzi ‘Bomzi’ Lekgoro. The 33-year-old hairstylist is from Orange Farm made a name for herself and now comes highly recommended by industry gurus.
With over five years’ experience in the industry; she has done braids, locks, twists and every other hairstyle you can think of for stars such as Connie Ferguson, Ayanda Thabethe, Kelly Khumalo and Jo-Anne Reyneke. She has also worked with brands such as True Love, Dark n Lovely and Cosmopolitan.
Speaking to Drum, Bomzi explains how she got started in the industry.
“The first two years I worked in a salon while freelancing part time, then I decided to freelance full time in 2017 and I’ve never looked back," she says.
It's not hard for her to round up her favourite personalities to work with.
“I honestly enjoy working with most celebrities but my top two celebs are Boity Thulo and Connie Ferguson,” she says. While passion drives her craft, she gets to travel across the country to different sets and work her magic.
“I was once asked to cut a models hair into a staircase shape, it was challenging, and I couldn’t crack it. I took my lemons and made lemonade by giving the model a ‘Fresh Prince of Belair’ inspired haircut and the client loved it,” she says.
Asked about the strangest place she has done hair, Bomzi has a lot of stories to tell.
“It’s not that strange but location shoots have had me styling hair on a rock under a tree, at the back seat of a car, the list goes on," she says.
Inspired by how the likes of Missy Elliot, Alicia Keys and Lupita Nyongo wear their hair, she does not hold back on expressing herself either.
“I love how these women have no boundaries when it comes to their hairstyles. I love working with people who are not scared of trying something different, that allows my creativity to flow. This is both with my own hairstyles and the hair I create for my clients.”
Bomzi hopes to receive a request from Beyoncé in the near future, “(I’m) ready to do B’s hair,” she says.
