He was loved by celebrities and ordinary South Africans alike. Bob Mabena’s sudden death has shocked the country and tributes have been pouring in since then.

The radio presenter died after spending two days in hospital, a family spokesperson said.

Celebrities have been reminiscing about the role he played in their lives since he died.

He’s taught them a lot, most said, and they will never forget the lessons.

We take a look at some of the tributes.

Unathi Nkayi

The singer thanked Bob Mabena for wanting her to be the best version of herself to sharing his gifts of radio and television with her.

“There are too many milestones to mention and one will spend a lifetime reminiscing over them. But one that I cherish the most is saying goodbye to your father with you and spending the whole day with you and family eAtridgeville after the send-off and you introducing us to all your childhood friends with proud Segale Mogotsi by your side,” she said.

DJ Fresh

To the DJ, Bob Mabena was a mentor that gave him a chance and welcomed him with open arms.

“Thanks for making radio effortless! For being patient with this kid, when he so badly wanted to join U @ Radio Metro, & kept giving you demos,” DJ Fresh captioned his post.


In 2014 the rapper featured on JR’s song titled Bob Mabena. He also spoke about how the late radio personality and Glen Lewis were his windows into the world of hip hop. The rapper also captioned that he missed the opportunity to meet Bob Mabena due to his shy nature.

Thando Thabethe

“Radio is silenced! This man for me is radio,” she said. The radio presenter also thanked the late presenter for the lessons she has learnt. 

DJ Sbu

DJ Sbu paid tribute to his childhood hero by posting an interview he had with the late legend on his podcast, The Hustlers Corner.

“My heart is hurting like everyone else. This was too soon God. It was an honour to spend time with you, learn from you & just having lived in your time is an honor,” the DJ captioned the video.

With a career in radio broadcasting that has spanned over three decades, some of the radio stations he has worked at, have also released their tributes.

Kaya FM

We are saddened to hear of the passing of Bob Mabena. May his soul rest in peace and his legacy live on,” the radio station captioned their tribute posts to the late presenter.

They also posted a throwback photo of the team Bob was a part of in 1997.

Power 98.7

The last radio station that Bob Mabena worked at with a breakfast show between 6am and 9am. The radio station has also created a podcast documentary that pays tribute to the former co-host.
