  • Actress Phindile Gwala had to close down her tshisanyama business because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • She is now launching a new online busineses called Coffee with Phindile.
  • Although she is focused on her businesses, she will still be appearing on a number of TV shows this year.

Actress Phindile Gwala says the Covid-19 pandemic has helped her to become more innovative in the way she does business.

During the lockdown the former Muvhango actress – who owns a car-wash and tshisanyama that’s often frequented by the who's who of Celebville – had to close the doors of her booming business. This affected the business’ cash flow, resulting in job losses.

But instead of being disheartened, Phindile came up with a new way of doing business by starting a virtual network, dubbed Coffee with Phindile, where people can network in the comfort and safety of their own homes.

"Though Covid-19 has dealt us a heavy blow, it has forced us to come out of our comfort zones and think creatively.  The launch of our online networking initiative will not only be viable during this period but will be useful even after the pandemic," she says.

The virtual networking initiative will be launched on 30 July.  Businesses will be allowed to sell their goods and services on the platform. Phindile hopes to continue to develop entrepreneurs whilst her focus is to see a strong chain of successful businesswomen all over Africa.

She tells us all about her new business.

What is Coffee with Phindile exactly?

It is a digital gathering of women of influence promoting black business excellency by finding a means of survival during the pandemic era.

What was the inspiration for the concept?

After seeing so many women affected by the loss of jobs, I decided to find a solution rather than sitting on the problem. Usually abafazi are known for gossip over a cup of tea but this time it is Coffee with Phindile. It’s to find better ways of living. We are the solution after all.  I pray for a country that affords women a chance to be more active in businesses or the workplace by creating women leaders of change.

How can entrepreneurs be part of the platform?

We will soon be launching, and we’ll be announcing more details as we move along.  All I can say is that my team has been working nonstop to create an amazing gathering of influence by women for women from all spheres of life.

How has the Covid-19 pandemic affected you as a businesswoman?

Today we see the stats on the rise, and every time I’m reminded I was meant to travel around the world but Covid-19 said, “No, stay here.”

I had my life planned out. Our movie, that I featured, in was nominated and showing at different international film festivals. Earlier I went to the USA for a screening and my mid-year plan was to travel on an international level.

For now, lets us say our future is here at home and I shall come out winning after this. I would like to see you all alive and revived.  I had to close my business due to the pandemic whilst trying to survive.  This has been a wake-up call. Hence, I want all women to wake up too [so that] we can take over together.
