American rapper Big Sean paid tribute to his former fiancée Naya Rivera.

The 33-year-old actress was tragically found dead in Lake Piru in South California, US, last week, after having disappeared a few days prior following a boating accident.

The rapper ended his engagement to the late Glee star in 2014. Naya then dated actor Ryan Dorsey. The pair married the same year and soon welcomed a son, Josey, who was on the boat when Naya went missing.

Taking to Instagram, the rapper wrote an emotional tribute to his former lover.

“Thank you for blessing us all with your talent and presence. you are a hero! Not just because of how you saved your son, also because of the barriers you knocked down for so many people to make them feel confident in themselves and to stand tall and be proud when they couldn’t achieve that on their own,” he said. “I appreciate and cherish everything that ever happened between us for making me wiser and a better person,” he said.

The Blessings rapper ended his message by admitting he was still coming to terms with the loss. “I’m still grieving and in shock, I can’t believe this is real. I’m praying for you and your family,” he continued, adding that he knows Naya is “watching over them and protecting them.”

“Rest In Peace Naya ??????,” he wrote.

Naya and Big Sean started dating in April 2013 and got engaged in October. However, in April 2014, Big Sean called off the engagement amid rumours that he’d cheated on Naya.

Speaking to PEOPLE then, Big Sean said it was a  “difficult decision” to end things with Naya and he wishes the actress nothing but the best.

After going their separate ways, TMZ reported the cheating rumours weren’t the only thing that led to the couple’s split. According to the outlet, the couple would often get into heated arguments, which sometimes turned violent.

A few years after their breakup, Naya shared her side of the story in her memoir Sorry Not Sorry: Dreams, Mistakes and Growing Up. In it, the star claimed she learnt of their split from the internet.

She also claimed Big Sean hooked up with Ariana Grande while they were still dating after she went to his house and found the singer inside.

“I walk in, go downstairs, and guess what little girl is sitting cross-legged on the couch listening to music? It rhymes with ‘Smariana Schmande’,” Naya wrote.

The actress went missing on Wednesday after arriving at Lake Piru in California. It is believed she got into difficulty while swimming and managed to get Josey back on the boat but was unable to save herself. Her 4-year-old son was ultimately found alone in their pontoon.

The Venture County Medical Examiner’s Office has confirmed that Naya’s cause of death was drowning.

The Medical Examiner’s Office said in a statement: “The circumstances and visual characteristics all indicate that the body was that of Naya Rivera and the identity has been confirmed by dental comparison. The autopsy findings are consistent with a drowning and the condition of the body is consistent with the time that she was submerged. No traumatic injuries or disease processes were identified at autopsy.”
