The countdown has been running for quite some time. She's been doing live videos, sharing snippets about life on set and pieces of interviews she's done in the lead up to the big day.

And now it's finally here. The world will get to see the country's own Thuso Mbedu in the premier of the international series, The Underground Railroad. Snacks are ready, alarms have been set and Covid-safe bubbles are being formed by friends to watch it together. And excited South Africans have formally termed it #ThusoMbeduDay and she's here for all of that.

Thuso stars as Cora in the drama series. She escapes a Georgia plantation and boards a train as she seeks true freedom while being hunted by a notorious slave catcher.

Celebrities and ordinary South Africans alike have taken to their social media pages to celebrate the star. Some are creating watch parties and there's even a dance challenge that's already gaining traction.

The Market theatre will be hosting a screening for a limited number of people.

Her friends and fans have joined in on the dance challenge.
