She knows exactly what it feels like to be told no over and over. But she didn't let that stand in her way.
Umlilo hitmaker Rethabile Khumalo (25) has officially released her debut album 'Like Mother Like Daughter’.
“It is all God’s timing. When God says ‘yes’ no one else can say ‘no’.”
She has personal experience of that. Rethabile auditioned for SA Idols when she was 16 and didn't make it. It hurt, but she decided to pursue her dream anyway.
She has a single Ntyilo Ntyilo featuring the most talked about artist in the world right now, Jerusalema hitmaker Master KG. “He is amazing. I mean, the likes of Janet Jackson are now dancing to his song. Proof that you must stick to what you know and look at what God is going to do,” she says.
It took years for her to break into the entertainment industry. She refused to give up and her positive attitude has paid off.
Rethabile blew up after she was featured in DJ Zinhle's 2019 hit, Umlilo. That feature didn't just happen. She slid into the popular DJ's DMs. "Shoot your shot they say. When I DM’d her, she replied. We exchanged numbers and I sent her a voice note singing Umlilo and we got into studio,” Rethabile says.
After the success of the song, she went back to the Idols stage on her own terms to perform what had become one of the biggest hits of 2019. It was a great full circle moment for her.
Releasing her album is especially exciting for her. The singer was involved in a bad accident a few months ago. That didn't stop her from working on new music under Winnie Kay Music Records.
“After my accident, I could not walk but I don’t stop writing. I am grateful for the second chance. I am always trusting God’s process. Everything that happened was for a reason,” she says.
