The COVID-19 pandemic might have been discouraging for many, but the KZNEA recognised their talent in a small intimate ceremony.

The beginning of the KwaZulu-Natal Entertainment Awards (KZNEA) was dedicated to the movers and shakers in the entertainment industry. KZN stars came out in numbers to celebrate the talent that exists in their province.

Hosted by entertainer Somizi Mhlongo and media darling Pearl Thusi, the awards treated guests to performances from the province's best exports, Nasty C, Zandile Gumede, Babes Wodumo, Sjava, Mnqobi Yazo, Khuzani INdlamlenze Mpungose to name a few.

Black Coffee, DJ Tira, and Black Mambazo were awarded the Special Achievement Awards.

“It’s an honour to be recognised at home,” says DJ Tira. “People always believe that in order t make it in entertainment, you need to be in Johannesburg I am proud of how far KZN has come. My goal has always been to empower people from where I come from.” 

Black Coffee’s award was accepted by his son Esona Maphumulo (21) who says his father could not be more honoured. “My dad’s roots and heart are in KZN and receiving this award means a lot to him.”

Winners in each category pocketed R100 000 while the KZN's Most Loved was companied by an R500 000 cheque.

KZNEA chairman Xolani Majozi was thrilled to have had a successful first run. "After many sleepless nights, our dream of honouring our own has been achieved. KZN is rich in arts and music and tonight was a testament to this. We aim to grow and inspire.”
