Renowned South African musician Sibongile Khumalo has died. She was 63.

According to her family, she died after a long illness and “succumbed to stroke related complications”.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr Sibongile Khumalo, our iconic, world-celebrated South African singer,” the family said in a statement.

Sibongile was born in Soweto and was known for her soulful music.

Her family said she would be missed by all who had a privilege of experiencing her music, her friendship and love.

Tributes have already started pouring in for the celebrated musician, with South Africans expressing their shock at her untimely passing.

The Steve Biko foundation said she was an umatched icon of SA Music.

“Ms Khumalo’s warmth and generosity of spirit were matched only by the immense talent she demonstrated and the glorious voice that lifted our national spirits on so many occasions.”
