The housewives are back. Only this time, the franchise is in Durban.
The show has had two seasons of The Real Housewives of Johannesburg, which were successful. Now fans will get to see how Durban housewives live.
The cast of the Durban show will include Ayanda Ncwane, Kgomotso Ndungane, Nonkanyiso Conco, Sorisha Naidoo, Nonku Williams and Annie Ludick.
Drum chats to Kgomotso Ndungane, owner of events and floral business, Oak Celebrations and wife to former union rugby player, Odwa Ndungane.
"When I got approached to do The RHOD, I was quite surprised as I didn’t think I fitted the profile of a Real Housewife who is seen to be lavish and living a certain glamourous lifestyle.
"So I decided to join with the intention of showcasing and promoting my businesses, Oak Celebrations and Lelapa Brand," she says.
"However, today as I reflect on this reason, I find that I’ve achieved more than just that because I had to learn so much about myself. I’ve had to step out of my comfort zone and it’s the best thing I could have done for a self-discovery journey."
Kgomotso will share all the parts of her life that include being a wife, businesswoman and a mom and how she balances them all.
"I am a fun-loving creative who is dedicated, compassionate and continues to invest time in personal growth in order to give back to family, to the community and everyone who supports me.
"In my other role as a businesswoman, I am a visionary. I often see what I am going to do before I even begin it. Being a creative by nature, I build in my head with guidance from my soul. I then execute with focus, hard work, and strategy.
"As a family person, I am dedicated to playing a role that is exemplary to my children while receiving guidance, love and support from my husband. He remains the head that continues to support us by his presence and love for family," she says.
"I balance all these through the support of my husband and people we trust.
"I can't wait to share these parts of myself with viewers of the show, especially those who have always wondered how I do it all," she adds.
Being a big family person, Kgomotso promises that viewers will get to see a bit more of that side of her life as well as all the glitz that comes with it.
"Family is my life, so yes and yes – viewers can expect to see some intimate and heart-warming moments between me and my family.
"Hopefully they will also get to see that Odwa is more handsome and funnier than his identical twin brother, Akona," she jokingly says.
Kgomotso will also be launching her home, body and bath product range, Lelapa during one of the episodes of the show.
She doesn't regret the decision to join the show and has grown fond of some of the other wives who feature.
"Filming with the other ladies was dramatic and over the top. I mean this is the Real Housewives Of Durban guys," she says laughing.
"I do have my favourite ladies, yes, and I can only hope that the feeling is mutual. You will know very soon who they are. My standout moment was when we went go karting in the Midlands and I was 'robbed' of my winnings."
Kgomotso also says viewers can expect entertainment beyond the stereotype that exists about the franchise show.
"I think over and above the stereotype of drama, viewers should expect a lot of wit, spice, fashion, businesswomen, luxury cars by Queen Sorisha, a lot of celebrations, and values of lives that are completely different or similar to their own," she says.
"We have the exact lives, challenges, struggles and successes that every women and family in South Africa faces."
Setting the record straight on whether reality shows are scripted or not, Kgomotso says none of the wives are actors but just women sharing parts of their lives with the continent.
"We are narrating it in a very pressurised position of reality and not an acted-out script. We are not actors, we live normal lives, and we are presenting them in an entertainment showbiz space," she says.
Real Housewives of Durban premieres on Showmax on Friday, 29 January 2021, with new episodes following every Friday.
