It was a treat for all classic R&B lovers as Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds and Teddy Riley took to Instagram Live to take turns playing their respective hits.
The live battle had originally been scheduled to take place earlier this month, however, Babyface and some members of his family tested positive for coronavirus and it had to be postponed. He later took to Instagram to announce that they were recovering, and accepted the invitation from Timbaland and Swizz Beatz to participate in the battle.
The music battles, which producers Timbaland and Swizz Beatz have
branded Verzuz, were introduced
after people all over the world started staying at home due to Covid-19.
Snippets of the battles can be found on Verzuz’s various social media accounts.
Record producer Timbaland has also filed an official
trademark for the brand as engagement with it has been very high.
The R&B singers went head to head, presenting 20 classic songs each that they had either performed, written or produced for a variety of artists. In the first round, Teddy Riley presented SWV’s hit single Right Here which is a remix of the late Michael Jackson’s Human Nature. Babyface countered it with Toni Braxton’s Love Shoulda Brought You Home.
Throughout the battle, the singer-songwriters presented hits from the likes of Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, TLC and the late Whitney Houston. Fans also got to watch a short guitar performance by Babyface. He was the fan favourite and won the battle in the end with his timeless catalogue of songs.
