Earlier this year, the news of a biopic about late singer Lebo Mathosa’s life broke and viewers were excited that Kelly Khumalo would be playing the lead, but a few months later it was revealed that she had pulled out and that KB Motsilanyane would replace her.
Speaking during an interview on METRO FM on Thursday, Kelly revealed the reason why she decided to pull out of the production.
“…my problem is the conditions. You know when you are in the bathroom and the bathrooms are dirty, there’s no change rooms and when you complain you get told that you are a diva,” she explained to the show’s hosts, Thomas and Pearl.
“For me it got to a point where who I am couldn’t take it,” she explained.
Speaking to City Press, Legend Manqele whose company has partnered with Kelly Khumalo to reposition her brand, confirmed that the conditions on the set of the upcoming biopic were not of substantial quality.
“Kelly felt that working under these conditions was limiting her ability to honour the talented icon that was Lebo Mathosa and execute a sound performance,” he told the publication.
Kelly also added that she now knows her worth and wasn’t prepared to settle for less.
“I know my self-worth. I am at a point in my life where I have recognised the importance of representing myself the best way I can possible do,” she told City Press.
