Multi-award-winning musician Thandiswa Mazwai aka King Tha recalls the day her mother, Belede Mazwai, died when the singer was only 16 years old.
The songstress took to social media to express that this day, 21 April, takes her back to the day her mother passed away: “I was never the same but I am thankful for the lessons & the very visceral feeling that God and my ancestors are with me [sic],” she wrote.
Belede died at the age of 33 in 1992.
Now 44 years old, Thandiswa’s love for her late mother is no secret. In 2016, she released her album named after her mom, Belede. The record includes some of her most-loved songs such as Jikijela and Kulala. She describes her mother as one of the most revolutionary women she knew, “A rebel to the core”.
Taking to Twitter, she went on to say how incredibly stylish her mom was.
“She was super stylish and super smart! Like hella smart! You would NEVER find my mother without a book, pen and paper! NEVER!”
Losing a mother at an early is ohne sentiment she shares with many South Africans, and the beautiful songstress admits the pain of losing her mom that young never grows old.
