Unathi Nkayi taken to the BCCSA over Xhosa comments on Idols SA

Media personality Unathi Nkayi is in hot water for alleged ‘tribalistic’ comments she allegedly made during an Idols SA episode.

Unathi’s comment was to Idols contestant Luyolo Yiba, after he gave a stellar performance on the show. She said, “Xhosa people, we are tired of holding up the nation” and it clearly didn’t sit well with many.

Even though she later explained and apologised, this incident was reported to the Broadcasting Complaint Commission of South Africa (BCCSA).

"It saddens me that I have broken so many hearts with what I said tonight. What I saw was a beautiful joke being passed around this past week by so many South Africans not necessarily Xhosa and wanted to share," she posted after receiving the backlash.

The BCCSA has refused to comment on the issue citing that it’s still an on-going case.

“At this stage we cannot comment on the matter since the matter is still pending,” the organisation told Move! in an email.
