Red wine cake with a glass of Shiraz
Red wine cake with a glass of Shiraz

  • 260g - butter, softened
  • 500ml - flour
  • 125ml - red wine
  • 180ml - cocoa powder
  • 5ml - vanilla essence
  • 125ml - caster sugar
  • - pinch of salt
  • 7ml - bicarbonate of soda
  • 375ml - caster sugar
  • 2 - eggs
  • 250ml - red wine

Preheat the oven to 180 °C. Grease and flour a bundt pan.

1 In a bowl, mix the flour, cocoa powder, bicarb and salt. In another bowl, beat the butter with the sugar until fluffy.

2 Add the eggs, one at a time, to the butter and sugar mix and beat until incorporated. Add the vanilla and beat for another two minutes. Fold in the dry ingredients and the wine until just incorporated.

3 Scrape the batter into the prepared pan, and bake for 45 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

4 Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then turn it out onto a rack. Let it cool completely.


In a pan over medium heat, add the sugar and wine. Simmer while stirring for three minutes. Pour over the cake and serve.
