Many brides look for inspiration or even copy wedding dress from celebrities or royals when they plan their big day. But very few can say they’ve worn the original.
KZN couple, Nana Shange and Phathizwe Mkhize, were lucky enough to wear Lucy and Mrekza’s wedding attires. Yes, the ones they wore on Generations: The Legacy when the characters played by Manaka Ranaka and Kope Makgae tied the knot.
The pair entered an online competition run by the soapie and won.
Even though the couples had a similar taste in how they wanted to look on their big day, their love stories were polar opposite when we spoke to Nana about her love story with Phathisizwe.
They’ve known each other since they were in primary school. They were in the same class until they went to high school.
Unfortunately, in high school Nana went to live with her mother in Durban where she finished high school leaving Phathisizwe in Port Shepstone.
“We met again in Durban when he came to do his tertiary studies. But I had already moved to Joburg because I was working. So we dated long distance,” she says.
“In 2018 we fell pregnant and in March 2019 we had a baby boy. In November 2019 he paid lobola,” she shares.
She says she’s received so much love and support from his family and she feels at home.
They dated for five years before deciding to get married. “We didn’t even have a proper engagement and all of those things about kneeling down,” she says.
The duo then had their African traditional wedding last December and got to wear the attire from their favourite soapie.
She says wearing that dress and her husband wearing that suit was her prayers, answered.
Nana describes her husband as someone who is kind-hearted, genuine and puts everyone else before himself and that’s what she loves about him.
Speaking on their future plans to build their family, Nana says, “Phathisizwe wants two more children and I feel like it’s in God’s hands.”
