An eight-year-old boy was shot and killed in gang crossfire in Steenberg, Cape Town, Western Cape police said on Thursday.

Lt-Col Andrè Traut said Mogamat McKenzie was shot in the head at about 7pm on Wednesday in Melody Square.

He said a woman, 34, was also shot and injured in the crossfire between two people. Both were admitted to the hospital, where McKenzie died from his injuries. No arrests had been made.

Provincial police commissioner Arno Lamoer conveyed his condolences on Thursday, saying it was "very sad" that children were being hurt in something they were not involved in.
