You will need
Patties
1 kg lean beef mince
2 onions, very finely chopped
15-30 ml (1-2 tbsp) garlic and ginger paste
60 ml (¼ cup) soy sauce
500 ml (2 cups) dried breadcrumbs
1 egg, beaten
500 ml (2 cups) coarsely grated Cheddar cheese
salt and freshly ground black pepper
Mayonnaise sauce
60 ml (¼ cup) creamy mayonnaise
small onion, finely chopped
2 gherkins, finely chopped
1 clove garlic, finely chopped
15 ml (1 tbsp) parsley, finely chopped
salt and freshly ground black pepper
Serve with
6 wholewheat rolls
butter
lettuce leaves
12 slices of cheese
½ cucumber, sliced
about 125 ml (½ cup) sliced baby tomatoes
Method
Preheat the oven to 180 °C and lightly grease two or more baking sheets.
Patties
Mix all the ingredients together.
Shape the mixture into a long sausage and cut it into 18 equal-sized pieces.
Roll six into balls and flatten slightly to make thick patties and freeze the rest.
Place on the prepared baking sheets and bake in the oven for 10 to 15 minutes, until done.
Remove and set aside.
Mayonnaise sauce
Mix the ingredients together and chill in the fridge until needed.
Halve the rolls but don’t cut them right through, then butter lightly.
Layer a lettuce leaf on each roll, followed by 2 slices cheese, cucumber and a beef patty.
Add a spoonful of the sauce and sliced baby tomatoes.
Season with ground pepper and serve.
