A grandmother from Florida in America was distraught after learning that her six-year-old granddaughter had been arrested after she threw a tantrum at her elementary school last week.
WFLA news reports that Meralyn Kirkland received a call from her granddaughter’s school to tell her that her granddaughter had been arrested following a ‘tantrum’.
“He said there was an incident and she kicked somebody and she is being charged and she is on her way,” she explained to WFLA news.
Meralyn’s granddaughter, Kaia Rolle, was apparently acting out because of her sleep apnea,
“She has a medical condition that we are working on getting resolved.”
According to Fox News, her conduct resulted in her being taken to the principal’s office, while there, a school staff employee grabbed Kaia's wrists which made the little girl lash out and kick her legs.
The employee she kicked was the school’s resource officer, Dennis Turner, of the Orlando Police Department. Dennis then handcuffed Kaia and transported her to be processed at the Juvenile Assessment Center in Orlando on a battery [assault] charge. There the toddler was fingerprinted and had her mug shot taken.
Her grandmother still questions how a six-year-old could be arrested for kicking someone,
“How do you do that to a six-year-old child and because she kicked somebody? A literal mug shot of a six-year-old girl. No six-year-old child should be able to tell somebody that they had handcuffs on them and they were riding in the back of a police car and taken to a juvenile center to be fingerprinted,” she said.
The Orlando Police Department told Fox News via email that Kaia had been released before she was processed, it is arresting officer Dennis Turner who faces hot water now. As per the departments email they stated that the arrest of people under the age of 12-years-old requires arresting officers to get permission from their watch commander, which Dennis did not do.
The officer has also arrested an eight-year-old in a separate incident, an arrest she also did not have permission for. BuzzFeedNews reported Dennis Turner will be subject to an internal investigation.
