HIV infections are down

Head of Research at the South African Institute of Race Relations, Lerato Moloi, has attributed the improvement to a number of interventions.

"Condom usage has gone up from about 18 % in 1996 to almost 70% in 2012. This is quiet an important indicator because research has shown that people who use condoms at first sex are more likely to continue with this trend throughout their lives," says Moloi.

She adds, "Also things like publicity programmes and education of people on how to protect themselves from the virus have contributed to the decrease on the number of infections in the country."
