A Limpopo mother is in police custody, facing charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, after allegedly hacking her 10-year-old son with a panga.

Neighbours rushed to the home of the single mother in the Mabangeni area, Limpopo, when they heard disturbing screams coming from the house. It is here where the 29-year-old mother had allegedly assaulted her son before hacking him with a panga on the evening of 22 February, allegedly because the son returned home after 9pm.

“Upon arrival at the house, they allegedly knocked and shouted at the mother, begging her to stop and open the door. When the door was finally opened, they found that the child was already on his knees bleeding. He told them that his mother chopped him with a panga,” Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo tells DRUM.

Hlekani Mathevula (19), who saved the boy from the wrath of his mother, told Daily Sun that he rushed to the house fully aware that the mother was drunk and when in such a state the son usually becomes her punching bag. “This is not the first time. She previously assaulted him with a hammer and the child had to be rescued. We alerted the police about her behaviour and how she constantly neglects the child.”

Once the mother opened the door, neighbours rushed to the boy who had visible cuts on his forehead and shoulder. The mother was arrested on the scene, Brigadier Mojapelo confirmed, and ”the victim was taken to Nkhensani Hospital for medical treatment”.

The boy was discharged on Wednesday morning into the care of a local social worker. The mother briefly appeared in Giyani magistrate’s court on Monday 24 February and her case was postponed to Monday 2 March for formal bail application.
