A 72-year-old man and a woman found in possession of Mandrax with a street value of around R1.2 million appeared in the Kimberley Magistrate's Court on Monday, the NPA said. The matter was postponed to September 8 for a formal bail application, National Prosecuting Authority Northern Cape spokeswoman Mashudu Malabi said. The pair was arrested in Kimberley on Saturday, on a train from Johannesburg en route to Cape Town.
"[Police] swiftly attended to the complaint and a 72-year-old man as well as a 49-year-old woman were found to be in possession of about 12,439 suspected Mandrax pills which were contained in two bags," Lieutenant Donald Mdhluli said.
It was unclear where the two were going.
"While on the scene police managed to also search and arrest a 42-year-old man for being in possession of about 1.8g of cocaine," said Mdhluli.
The pair and the man were separately charged with drug possession.
