A pilot used his skill to get the faulty landing gear of his light aircraft to engage before making an emergency landing near Klerksdorp on Thursday, paramedics said.

"We had a team on standby but the pilot performed a series of manoeuvres to activate the landing gear and was able to land safely," Netcare 911 spokesman Jeffrey Wicks said.

A rescue team waited at the airfield outside the North West town at 8am for the plane to land.

Wicks said the pilot was the only person in the single propeller plane.
