A Pretoria athlete who won 25 Comrades marathon medals has been killed in a hit-and-run accident, the Beeld reported on Tuesday.

Jan Vreken, 73, was hit by a car between the Total Garage and the N1 offramp, in Queenswood, at 6am on Saturday while running the practice route he had used for nearly 30 years.

His wife Rheda became worried when he had not returned home by 11am, Vreken's son Jan-Hendrik, 38, told the newspaper.

They eventually traced him to the Steve Biko hospital, where he had already died.

Vreken won his Comrades medals between 1980 and 2007, and he had a double green number, 5435, an honour given only to runners who have completed 20 or more Comrades races.
