It’s official, the SAMAs are reducing categories! As though by way of following international trends, the number of genre categories has been reduced from close to 60 at last event to around 30 for the upcoming SAMA 18.
This effectively means mzanzi’s biggest awards will henceforth dispense with a number of subgenres. MTN SAMA 18 is set to have around 15 genre categories covering rock, adult contemporary, pop, dance, traditional, jazz, and urban, among others.
This, RISA believes will “allow for records in all the main genres to compete more directly against each for a SAMA, adding substantially to the prestige of being named winner.”
Newly appointed MTN SAMA CEO Randall Abrahams said: “Every year RISA and its members undertake an intensive review of the categories and the awards show as part of an ongoing commitment to take the MTN SAMAs forward in the best possible way,
“There are several other awards event that focus on specific music genres, among them the Metro Awards and the SATMAs.
What distinguishes the MTN SAMAs is that it is a celebration of the rich variety of homegrown music we find in this country, and the new category structure is a way of rewarding the best of the best within that.”
