Tasty corn dogs


Preparation time: 10 min

Cooking time: 3 min

Serves 6   vegetable oil, for frying 375 ml (1½ cup) polenta or braai pap 250 ml (1 cup) flour 15 ml (1 tbsp) baking powder

60 ml (¼ cup) sugar

salt and pepper to taste

1 egg

250 ml (1 cup) milk

12 frankfurter sausages

mayonnaise and tomato sauce to serve

1 Heat oil in a deep soup pot.

2 Mix all the dry ingredients in a bowl. Beat the egg and milk together and gradually stir this mixture into the dry ingredients. Whisk together to make a heavy batter.

3 Put skewers through each frankfurter sausage and dip it into the batter until well coated.

4 Place frankfurters into the hot oil a few at a time and cook for 3 minutes or until golden brown, turning the skewer in the oil to make sure it cooks evenly all the way around.

5 Drain on a plate lined with kitchen paper towels.

6 Serve with mayonnaise and tomato sauce.   Tip: Use cocktail sausages instead of frankfurters. Then serve them with sweet chilli sauce. - For vegetarians or as a sweet snack after a meal, try this with bananas or apple wegdes. Cover them with the batter and deep-fry as above. Serve with natural yoghurt flavoured with orange juice.
