Youth Movement – Charl Du toit

Charl du Toit, I AM web radio* presenter, has a rare talent – the presence of soul to grab you by the heart and hold your undivided attention.

He has a deep understanding of things that we all experience: love, pain, suffering, redemption and joy. It is not his studies in Theology that gives him the right to talk about matters of the heart; it’s his road from suicide to sonship.

“I have tried to commit suicide a couple of times in my life. There was one incident where I cut my wrists.     I fell unconscious because of blood loss. It was in my matric year, February 2005. I’ve been diagnosed with depression from the tender age of 11. It was right after my grandma died of cancer. I was put on anti-depressants and used it for the ascribed period. I was re-diagnosed with depression when I was 18 and had to go back on the anti-depressants. I used it for the last time just before my 21st birthday.”

Charl is living proof of statistics that indicate that most teens are depressed. He is also proof that you can be a Christian and suffer from (and triumph over) depression. He not only understands what listeners go through, but brings hope.

People hide their depression because they are ashamed of it. Charl wears it as a badge of honour to the power of the One that walks with him.

As an I AM presenter Charl’s broadcasting will always lead listeners to three questions that plague the heart of man until answered:

  • Who am I?
  • Where am I going?
  • Who is going with me?

But his programs are not “serious business”, non-stop. There’s laughter, music and much joy. Catch Charl next Thursday on  for a slice of the fearful, yet wonderful thing, we call life.
