What’s your main criteria when buying a smartphone? It seems Cat has taken things up a notch with a phone that does more than just keeping you in touch with loved ones. Even helping to save lives!
First responders were able to use the Cat® S61 rugged smartphone’s integrated thermal imaging feature while responding to a road accident recently – one of the nasty daily realities on South Africa’s roads.
The Emergency Disaster Response (EDR) international team based on the Garden Route were assisting at a late-night accident where they found an unconscious man in a vehicle. An alert team member realised there might be more occupants involved – based on the belongings still in the car. A general search using flashlights yielded no results but using the thermal imaging camera on their Cat S61, the team quickly found two “heat signatures” that led them to two more victims who’d been flung from the vehicle and were in critical condition.
The Cat phone’s thermal imaging feature helped identify the “heat signatures” (the device forms a “heat zone” image using infrared radiation, similar to normal cameras that form an image using visible light emitted by objects and humans) that quickly guided the responders to the injured, avoiding a lengthy search that could’ve proved fatal.
Team leader at EDR Gee Swart says: “It’s impossible to single out one favourite feature. The ruggedness and durability are like no other device I’ve used before. I've used it on fire lines where it can be over 60°C, I've used it in sub-zero temperatures, and it performed brilliantly.
“It’s been dropped more times than I can remember and has survived direct sprays from fire hoses . . . The thermal imaging camera is a life-saver for us and has become a must-have after it helped save lives and property.”
In short, the Cat® S61 smartphone is a durable instrument that comes in handy. The upgrade to the Cat S60 gives you a powerful 4 500mAh battery that’s bigger and better, with enhanced software that makes the resolution of thermal images twice as visible – it can now read temperatures up to 400°C. This is a feature that comes in handy if you enjoy outdoors activities or your job entails braving the elements early morning and late at night.
The hardcore Cat S61 phone is drop-proof, waterproof and resistant to dust – and it also helps you monitor air quality and locate damp areas, leaks and blockages – along with the integrated laser-assisted distance measure.
It’s more than just a cellular phone, it’s a smartphone that acts as an advanced, loyal partner that’s by your side when you need it most.
