You’ve seen them on Mzansi Magic and watched as they’ve batted it out to win the big prize. Each week, the 10 Style Squad finalists completed a design challenge and received feedback from guest judges such as Julian Kubel, founder of Butan Wear; DRUM’s fashion editor, Peta-Lee Matjaola; and Kentse Masilo, Project Runway SA’s first winner.
Inspiring, challenging and nerve-wracking – the 10 young designers gave it their all, and it wasn’t an easy job to choose the winners. After completing their final challenge of creating a complete outfit for winter, the two winners were chosen – a big congratulations to Jorjie and Thaps!
These young aspiring designers not only won the opportunity to design their own clothing ranges for Ackermans, but they each walk away with R10 000 cash, R5 000 for their schools and a R10 000 educational policy.
Jorjie is Cape Town’s own Donatella Versace and can design with her eyes closed. One day when she's even more famous, she wants to be a voice for the voiceless. The colour pink, David Tlale, Catwoman and the Combyne fashion app are some of her favourite things.
Thaps, on the other hand, spends his weekends cooking and experimenting with makeup. This funny and seemingly shy young designer from Germiston loves designing items that are out of the ordinary, fit for people comfortable in their own skins. For local inspiration, he looks to David Tlale and he would love to meet SA rapper Nadia Nakai.
