Dear Sis Dolly

My son is giving me many problems.

He’s 27 years old and has one child. He also has many girlfriends and he steals from me and then disappears for months.

He never listens and I feel totally disrespected and want to disown him.

What do you think I should do?

It seems like you think that if you disown your son, then whatever bad things he does won’t affect you. However, you must remember that he is your son and you have a bond that can’t easily be severed.

Although he’s not a minor anymore and you’re not responsible for his wellbeing, unfortunately you still have an obligation towards him as a parent. Disowning him will not erase the fact that you are related to him.

You need to make sure you’ve done everything you can as a parent. This will ensure you don’t end up blaming yourself or feeling guilty if something happens to him.

You need to speak to him about his behaviour and tell him how it’s affecting you and how it could ruin his future. Talk to him about seeking help and committing himself to change. I suggest you find ways to show him that you are prepared to help him with his challenges.

You can seek the assistance of a counsellor in your area to empower him to redirect his path of life and find his purpose.
