I was attacked in the bus on my way home from work. I was lucky as someone came to help me, but now I’m so scared that I don’t want to get back in the bus ever again. I need the transport to get to and from work, but it is very hard for me. I shake and sweat and will only go if there’s someone I know with me. This isn’t a good way to live, so how can I get over this?

It is so sad that you had to go through such a bad experience that’s now disrupting your life. The symptoms you’re experiencing indicate you’re suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. It would have been ideal for you to have received trauma debriefing or trauma counselling straight after the ordeal, but it’s not too late.

You can call LifeLine on 0861- 322-322 to speak to a counsellor, or TraumaCall on 010-020-2425 for assistance. Please make sure you do follow up and get help so that it doesn’t escalate and end up taking over and restricting your life. Be brave and deal with this head-on – you’ve already taken the first step by acknowledging the challenge
