THE IMPORTANCE OF HAVING A COMMITTEE: Khomotso Sedumedi from Bomalavies Stokvel explains that a stokvel that does not have a committee might not succeed or could experience squabbles. “An executive committee that comprises of at least a chairperson, secretary and treasurer helps to ensure the smooth running of a stokvel,” she explains.
It’s important to have a committee where members are able to share their ideas and voice their opinions. “They must make sure that the person they appointed is trustworthy and responsible.
The chairperson of a stokvel must not make decisions alone, he or she must involve members in the decision making process,” she says. In a stokvel, a committee must also have a constitution which will dictate the size of contributions and the rules that govern the stokvel.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Elda from Harmony Club says there are certain responsibilities which members of the committee must take. “In our stokvel, we have a chairperson, secretary and treasurer.
A chairperson is responsible to lead the agenda of meetings, ensuring the rules are followed, and exploring opportunities for enhancing the stokvel’s practises,” she says.
She explains that the secretary is responsible for keeping the records of the stokvel proceedings and ensuring that members are well-informed of all activities of the stokvel. “We also have a treasurer who is responsible for all the stokvel’s finances.
A treasurer must make sure that money is collected and deposited into the stokvel’s bank account,” she says.“Two other members must co-sign with the treasurer for any bank transactions.”
Chairperson: A chairperson in a stokvel builds a sense of teamwork, and also completes tasks assigned to the stokvel group.A chairperson should also make arrangements for meetings, and notify members with dates, time and where the meeting is going to be held.
Treasurer: As a treasurer, your duty must be making sure that all the stokvel's finances are well organised. A treasurer has the responsibility of looking after stokvel's money.
A secretary: The role of a secretary is to support the chairperson in ensuring the smooth functioningof the stokvel. The secretary is responsible for ensuring meetings are effectively organised and being held accordingly. Also, the secretary’s job is to keep files and minutes accordingly.
