No job, no hope

I graduated from varsity last year and have been trying to find a job since. I was raised by a single mom and it’s been hard, and now I can’t find work. I’ve been applying, even walking around town and just dropping into places, but still nothing. I’m starting to feel depressed.

I feel like I have nothing to live for – all my friends are working and moving on with their lives and I feel stuck. I put on a brave face in front of my family, but I’m filled with anger, sadness and fear. I often cry myself to sleep because I feel like a loser. I’m finding it very hard to stay positive and I really don’t know what to do.

The issue of unemployment of graduates in this country is a dire one and is causing a lot of anxiety for a lot of young people. It causes even more stress when you start comparing yourself with other people, as you are doing. Don’t lose hope – believe your time will come. In the meantime, try to keep yourself busy. If you have a hobby that you know could bring in even a small income, do that for the time being.

You can also investigate the companies in your area that are willing to take on volunteers from your field of study. Any sort of work experience, even on a voluntary basis, will boost your career opportunities as you’ll be learning more skills. Employers also like to see this kind of initiative from a potential employee.

The Balance Careers suggests that feeling positive will help motivate you to continue looking for a job. It will be frustrating at times and you will want to give up. Try to not compare yourself too much to others and accept that your paths are different. It is also advisable to find a hobby that will keep you busy so that you don’t think about it too much.
