Legendary music producer Robbie Malinga is a man on a mission

LOCAL is lekker indeed, and legendary music producer, Robbie Malinga, is a living testimony of that. He started his music career as a youngster entering the kwaito

scene in 1998 when he released the smash hit, Insimbi. Robbie was a force to be reckoned with as his music would keep kwaito lovers on their toes while dancing up a storm.

Robbie was born and raised in Meadowlands, Soweto and his passion for music started at a young age. He says that it all started in church while fiddling with a keyboard. “God is able to lead you to your destination without realising that you are indeed bound for

success,” he says. “I started fiddling with the keys without knowing what I was doing. I would just press the keys and everything was out of tune. But I told myself that I would create a remarkable tune. Finally I came up with my own compositions, which resulted

in me being a pianist for the church.” Robbie, who is married to Anne Modubu, says

that he never missed church services as that would deprive him to learn more about playing music. “I focused on playing the piano and being in church also helped me to be close to God,” he says. Robbie says that when he realised that making music was close to his heart, he studied music at a college in Roodepoort with his friend Trompies star

Zynne ‘DJ Mahoota’ Sibika.

He says that he recently felt that he needed to grow his musical talent and shift to Afro soul and create hits for a number of musicians. “As a music producer, you need to grow and get to produce the quality of music that will be loved by music fans. I felt that I would do much better as an Afro pop and soul producer,” he says. When asked how he ended up being featured on the songs he produced, Robbie laughs and says, “Initially, I would be working towards giving the artists guidance on how I would want the song to be sung, but the artists would insist that I become part of the song.”

Robbie has just released his latest album titled The Duets through his newly formed record label, Robbie Malinga Entertainment. He also signed the star of the moment, Musa Sukwene of Mthande fame. Musa’s album Mr Serious, that was released two months ago, has already reached platinum status. Robbie has produced a number of hits for the likes

of Kelly Khumalo, Naima K, Zahara, Ntando and Fiso. He also won the best producer of the year award at the SAMAS for his wonderful production on Zahara’s album, Country Girl. Robbie also won the Clash of the Choirs season 2 competition. His single, Baby Please, where he featured Kelly Khumalo is already making airwaves on radio charts.
