After losing her husband in a devastating car crash that left her injured, former Our Perfect Wedding (OPW) presenter Kayise Ngqula took an almost year-long break from TV, but she’s set to return to our screens this June with a role in season 2 of Mzansi Magic’s Housekeepers.
Speaking to DRUM, the mother of one spilled the tea on her character, Beauty.
“I play Beauty who’s one of the housekeepers. She’s sweet, non-confrontational and is struggling with her relationship with her employer. She befriends Linda (Thando Thabethe) who helps Beauty find her voice and fight her battles legally,” she says.
Kayise says she got inspiration for her character from her domestic worker, who she spoke to about the challenges she has faced.
“Believe it or not, I spoke to my own helper/domestic worker about the challenges she has faced and how they made her feel. I also read up on the challenges housekeepers experience in their line of work and what solutions are at their disposal.”
Although the actress says there are barely any similarities between her and Beauty, there are three characteristics they share.
“The major similarity is our desire to do right and have people do right by us. I also found her to be loving and loyal, which I very much am too,” she says.
Kayise also reveals how excited she was when the show’s producers called her to audition for the role.
“It felt really amazing. I felt empowered and confident in my craft after having last been on set just before I was injured in a car crash, which left me unable to work for months. I’m really grateful for the opportunity to be back on screen,” she says.
She’s enjoying being back on set but “experiencing the emotions my character had to go through” was a challenge. “It gave me a lot to think about and be wary of as someone who employs a domestic worker.”
And the actress, who started her career in productions such as It’s Complicated, Skeem Saam, Ring of Lies and iThemba, says fans can expect a lot from her this year.
“This year is really about rebuilding and taking control of my life. The past year was my toughest yet with the death of my husband and recuperating from my injuries,” she says. “I want to find greater purpose in the projects I take part in – another of which launches later this month – and to emerge stronger than ever.”
Housekeepers season 2 premieres on Monday 15 June at 8pm on Mzansi Magic (DStv channel 161). There are many new additions to the cast, including Xolile Tshabalala and SK Khoza.
