When it was announced that veteran actor Meshack Mavuso would be joining the star-studded cast of 1Magic’s The River, viewers across Mzansi were excited to see him back on the small screen.
Over the past month he has captured and warmed hearts as Ntsizwa in the drama series, and his character’s untimely death had many fans in tears.
Abuti Ntsizwa – as he was called by Kedibone (played by Tsholofelo Matshaba), his love interest in the show – died of kidney failure.
The veteran actor took to Instagram to express his gratitude to the show’s producers and to reflect on his character.
“Dear Bra Ntsizwa,” he wrote, “as an actor, I have been blessed with breathing life into many characters, most of which had meaningful names and purposes – your character was exceptional Abuti Ntsizwa ka Kedibone.”
Mavuso reflected on how he became acquainted with the character upon receiving the script, and how he wanted to do Ntsizwa’s story justice – one a lot of ordinary South Africans will relate to.
“I get teary eyed when I think about people that are going through what you went through bhut’wam,” he wrote, referring to his character’s health problems and the difficulty of accessing medical care.
“I hope our government will watch this story, feel your pain and be inspired to increase efforts in building effective and life saving health care facilities for our people [sic],” he wrote, highlighting the importance of accessible healthcare for all.
“To you Bra Ntsizwa gaz’lam, it has been a great pleasure portraying you, thank you for choosing me to tell your story,” Meshack wrote.
