Only the best food makes it to the Christmas table. Whether it's that gammon or leg of lamb, or the trifle, every family has their own favourites.
And they have that one person trusted with cooking it just the right way.
Award-winning actress Thembsie Matu (54), loved for her role as Petronella on telenovela The Queen, tells DRUM that she will be making her favourite dish that always leaves her family and friends licking their plates and fingers.
“Yhoo, eish," she says, just excited about the dish already. "I can't wait to cook those chicken livers.” Thembsie is diabetic and over the years she has had to make health conscious adjustments to her diet. So whenever she is in the kitchen, she has to be mindful of how she prepares her food.
“I fry onion and green peppers. Then I mix them up together before pouring a little beef stock for taste, yum. I make sure that they are not hard. But importantly, I stay away from too much oil and spices."
Her love for livers was ignited during lockdown. “They are quick and easy to make and my family loves them. For those who visit me, they are so quick to make that before visitors finish greeting, I have already dished up for them,” she jokes.
Thembsie might not be having a Christmas party as she had hoped this year but she is sure is planning on having a good time.
“This Christmas I wanted to host a party but now I am afraid of this COVID. I will listen to what the President says and I will not host it anymore. I will be with my family and two or three friends. I will make sure that it is memorable and beautiful plus my garden is big,” she says.
In 2021, Thembsie has plans to do something comedy related. Although the plan is still in the pipeline, she says she is really hopeful that it will happen. She has no plans of stopping winning awards for her stellar role on The Queen too.
