Humility, authenticity and epic guests are what Dineo Ranaka and Sol Phenduka are promising their listeners on their new show on Kaya FM.

Dineo has been accused of bullying Sol, but both of them deny it, saying they are laying the foundation of their new partnership based on mutual respect. The pair recently joined the station to host the morning show, Kaya 959 Breakfast, but their union is not without a rocky start as listeners have accused Dineo of bullying Sol and not letting him speak.

Speaking to Drum soon after getting off air, the pair have rubbished the allegations of mistreatment with Sol saying this is not his first rodeo, and he knows how to be a co-host.

“It's crazy really,” he says.

“People need to listen to the show and not just rely on little snippets that they get on social media. But we get it and we are very accepting of all feedback,” he says.

Dineo is not bothered by negative comments.

“Generally, the people who are busy on social media are not the same people who wake up and listen to the show. Also, people who comment from a place of no knowledge of how things work, or relationships will always have the loudest comments. Empty vessels make the most noise.

“We cannot be focused on responding to negativity when we are building a loving relationship based on mutual respect.”

The duo were not strangers going into the show. Though they have never worked together, they have worked for the same radio station at the same time, they have been booked for the same gigs as DJs and Dineo has been a guest on Podcast and Chill with MacG, where Sol is the co-host.

“Its like any other relationship,” Dineo says, “we are getting to know each other on a different level because we know each other socially and have never worked together.”

Sol describes their partnership like a dance.

“Like Dinny says, you learn from each other, you vibe and you gel. There is a foundation being laid and beautifully so. We are both very opinionated and that works great for the show because sometimes we agree but other times we don’t,” adds Sol.

On the show so far, they have had guests like Connie Ferguson, Tats Nkozi, Nambitha Ben Mazwi and Monea, to name a few.

“We work with such an incredible team, where everyone’s professionalism is on 100. Our producer, Fentse, is the best in the game. He brings the most amazing guests.

"Then with humility, great respect and authenticity, Sol and I make the guests feel right and home. Then we are able to have organic conversations.”

Sol says doing research and truly talking to their guests is key for them.

“We really take time to get to know our guests and when we surprise them with something, you really see how much they appreciate it. Also, as a new show, people do not know what we are about and they are not exactly jumping out to get to us.

"But the more guests we have, and other celebrities see how we treat them, the more will come.

“Another thing is that we are a full wholesome breakfast show. We are not just playful, just about laughs and me about puns and jokes, but we are also able to tackle serious topics too. It can only get better from here.”

Because life happens, mistakes will be made and Dineo says having a teachable spirit and not pretending to be perfect is their recipe for success.

“It is very important to lead listeners to be well rounded human beings without them feeling we have an unattainable level of perfection. Obviously we are not going to apologize for every little technical error on air, but we will do our best to show our listeners the utmost respect.”
