Nomcebo 'Dot' Mthethwa spoke to us about her debut album and the lessons she's learnt in the industry.

Her love for music began at a young age where she sang at a school’s memorial service that had her teachers and her peers in awe of her voice and she hasn’t looked back ever since.

Nomcebo Mthethwa (24) popularly known as DOT is a singer, actress and TV presenter from Empangeni, Kwazulu-Natal. She is popular for being a presenter on Trace TV and for her role on Uzalo.

She is currently studying towards a Bachelor of Arts degree in Drama and Performance at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

She tells us she discovered her musical talent when her primary school needed a singer for a memorial service for a fellow classmate and she volunteered, little did she know that it would birth a passion for music in her.

“I grew up going to church and I would sing often. I was nine years old when there was a memorial service held at school and they needed a singer and I volunteered. I sang and people were happy that’s how I discovered that I could sing. I fell in love with music ever since and I decided that I wanted to pursue it as a career.”

She has released Gqom songs such as Amadlozi, Volcano, Makoti and now she is getting ready to release an Afro-pop song called Thatha Mih the song will be live streaming on all digital platforms on 3 December.

After taking a chance and experimenting with all kinds of music genres as a vocalist she has decided to stick to the sound that describes her the most as an artist which is Afro-pop.

The songstress is also working on an album titled ‘Isibuko’ that she is planning on releasing through her record label Royalty Dot Records and she tells us that the music she will be sharing will be personal as it will mirror her experiences in life.

“The songs in the album will be about my journey and its where people will be able to see my strength. It will feature a variety of artists that I can’t mention at the moment as it will only be released early next year.”

She has worked with many great artists such as Idols winner Musa.

She says that the industry comes with its challenges, but she is grateful for family and the love that she has been receiving from her fans.

“My family have been my support system; I always want to make my myself proud by being there for them. The inspiration in my journey has also been my supporters. I would like people to relate to my music and the messages that I have for people, I hope that I am able to encourage to be the best versions of themselves.”

“The journey is not easy but its important to know why you started. I have learnt a lot of things in my journey and there have been artists that have enabled me to grow, and they have helped me grow. I am motivated to know that I can also become a legend.”

When she is not making music or acting, she says that is a book lover and she spends most of her free time reading. She is also a daddy’s girl, and she admires the relationship she shares with her father.

Through her career as a young woman in the industry she says that it important to her to ensure that other young girls are aware of industry challenges before pursuing entertainment full time.

“Success does not happen instantly but if you are consistent, it will work out well. I encourage young girls to first pursue their studies and after that they can follow their dreams of being in entertainment.
