He set the local and African music scene alight with his breakout single, Nalingi, which went gold, topped charts across the continent and as he would put it, changed the course of his destiny.

He celebrates another milestone with the build-up to the release of his debut album, Molimo, which is already available for pre-add featuring single Choko.

He might have found his niche making hits with titles in Lingala, his Congolese mother tongue. He chose the album name, which means “My Spirit”, because he felt the body of work articulated his innate desires, he says.

“I felt this body of work defines and reflects the deepest desires and thoughts that come not from my mind, but from my spirit” Manu WorldStar, real name Emmanuel Mumbili Mutendji, says.

Music has a special place in the muso’s heart, speaking to DRUM last year at his EP listening session he explained how he started pursuing music while still working at his advertising job. A dream come true, he referenced, was when his hobby of making music turned into his full-time job and he had to quit his nine to five.

“I have a story of a normal kid who was kicking soccer balls and riding bikes in Berea just trying to find my way through life” he said at the time. He hopes to follow in the success of his previous singles, Future Plan and Rent which achieved great success on radio featuring on the Top 100 Radiomonitor Chart.

He’s spoken at length about making music which won’t be boxed into one specific genre and Raphael Benza, who executively produced Molimo, says this project is no different. “The project is an eclectic modern African sound of East, West, Central and Southern African music and voices. A true mix of popular Afrobeats.”

Manu WorldStar’s single, Choko, is an ode to pursuing your dreams relentlessly he says, “I want Choko to feed everyone’s souls just like how it fed mine” he adds. His full 12 track album will release on 4 September 2020.
