Sonia will take some time off to recover before going back to work.

She has a busy schedule, juggling her Alkamax water business, motherhood, and acting career. She's often always on the road, and can’t afford to be ill.

But businesswoman and actress Sonia Mbele's body demanded rest when she caught a case of food poisoning recently and has been booked off to get some rest at home.

“I usually plan my time away from work and don’t like to take unexpected breaks, but when you’re ill, there not much you can do,” she tells Drum.

While out dining, Sonia says she ate seafood which might have caused the reaction.

“It may seen small, but food poisoning is pretty serious. The reaction to the poison was immediate so there was no time to mess around, I had to attend to it immediately,” she says.

Very health-conscious and fussy about what she eats, in 2017 she cut out meat and became a pescatarian, eating only seafood in place of other meats.

“I stopped eating meat in 2017 so it’s been fish, veggies, and salads for the most part. That day was no different, I had fish but for some reason, it retaliated and caused food poisoning. The doctors suspected that it was because I had it cold, who knows,” she says.

“I didn’t think I had allergies but now I’m extra careful.”

With her brand of Alkamax water that she launched last year, Sonia says her health has been well balanced.

“I’m generally healthy; I gym, I do Body20 workouts which uses technology for 20-minute high-powered workouts, and I generally eat healthily. But I know that I recovered quickly because of Alkamax. Not to blow my own horn or self-promote but it has antioxidants that help with hydration, and it is ironized a great combination for the recovery. That helped me before I could see a doctor, she adds.

Sonia has been put on bed rest for two weeks.

“However I’m ready for the next project."
