Thembisa Mdoda on losing her mother to cancer: “Cherish your mothers”

Media personality Thembisa Mdoda is pained by the fact that her mother Yolisa Mdoda will never meet her grandchildren.

Thembisa lost her mother to pancreatic cancer more than a decade ago. The actress took to her Twitter page to remember her mother 11 years after her passing.

“Every time this day comes, I think about how she will never meet her grandkids. I think about words left unsaid. Cherish your mothers, guys. We think we have time but we don’t !!! [sic]” she posted.

In a TV interview on Real Talk with Anele, Thembisa opened up about the day she learnt of her mother’s passing.

When her dad broke the news, she recalled being on her knees and sitting down.

“I think in my mind it was just trying to set in and I remember just feeling pain all over my body. It was like it can’t be,” she told her sister Anele.

She went on to express her regret about not having a close relationship with her.

“I wish I’d spoken to her. I wish had let her in more. I wish I would have laughed with her more. I wish I wasn’t in my mind so much that I didn’t get to know her. I got to know a lot of her and about her after she passed away,” she said.

Despite not having a close bond with her mother, Thembisa said in a previous interview with DRUM that her mother was a great influence in the woman she has become.

“My mother shaped my values. She taught me to have manners and how to be a lady. She gave me my nurturing skills and taught me to love your family first and to take care of the ones close to you,” she said.
