Getting to know Nia Pearl

New soul star Nia Pearl just released her debut single Liberty featuring SAMA award winning star Kabomo. Nia chats to DRUM about her music, life and more.

Who is Nia Pearl and when did the music bug get you?

I am a singer, song writer and lover of all things art. I've been singing and performing since primary school days. One day I was watching tv and someone was singing. I decided to try mimic them and it sounded good to me, then I sang infront of my family, the reception was great, then I became the resident entertainer in my primary school and I've been singing ever since.

What is Liberty about and how did the song come about?

I wrote Liberty a couple of years ago when I got my heart broken by a boy. I felt It still resonated with me at this day and age and felt it would radiate with other people as well, so I thought I should create an anthem of sort, the kind of song that makes you feel better when you sing along to it, so my team and I decided to go to studio and we made it happen.

You collaborated with Kabomo on the song, have guys always been friends?

I met Kabomo in 2014, we were both performing at a Nescafé red mug session, I've always been a fan but working closely with him made me even more fascinated with his craft.. so fast forward to 2017, when I needed a rapper to jump on liberty, I wanted someone with a different approach, I wanted a rapper, but someone with soul, and I thought he'd be the perfect guy.. and it turns out he was.

What's your dream for yourself musically?

I want to tour the world you know, I want my music to reach different places and spaces in this world, I want to open an arts academy and already have a record label that I've signed myself to, I want to see it grow to a big label that changes many musicians' life’s.. I don't just want to sing, I want to contribute to the world through my God given gift.

Who are your musical influences?

I’m influenced by so many artists of different genres, mostly old artists too.. I'm inspired by the likes of Fela Kuti, prince, Joan armatrading, Letta Mbulu, Stimela, Ella Fitzgerald, the roots and many more.

What else can people expect from you as far as music is concerned?

A whole lot of honest, authentic and healing music.. my second single will be out in spring so I'm excited about that, and oh ja, we're gonna open that arts academy one day.

Nia Pearl's single is available ITunes and Apple Music.
